The Human Stain

My final project for Graphic Studio.  I created an 8-page magazine layout of a metal magazine called "The Human Stain."  I'm very happy with the end result.  Working on this made me realize I could be very happy doing something like this professionally.

Everything done in Illustrator.

March of Tobias

This is my "final" project for Type 1.  I say "final" because it was really just an extra assignment we did after the primary final, which was the 6-page spread you can see below.

This was another experiment with Photoshop.  I ended up making it a composite of Photoshop and Illustrator since I'm still pretty new to Photoshop and don't know how to do everything in one program.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, considering I'm just starting out.  The ghost-like figure is Tobias Sammet of Edguy and Avantasia, and the model is my sister, again.  The words are taken from Kamelot's song "March of Mephisto."

Got a Little Captain in You?

Just a fun piece I did for Typography class.  As I think I said in a previous post, Photoshop isn't being taught in any of my classes yet, so this was another experiment with that program.

I know she's not in the proper Captain Morgan pose, but when I took this picture, I didn't have Captain Morgan in mind.  It wasn't until later that I saw the resemblance and wished I had thought of it during the photo shoot.  But, c'est la vie.

Version 3

I think I'm finished working on this piece.  As I said in my previous post, this was really more of an experiment --  a project to help me learn Photoshop which should have been taught in one of my classes this semester but was unfoundedly neglected.  Regardless, I've already learned quite a bit about the program; I've had a lot of fun and can't wait to learn more about it.

Version 3, Final Version (for now)

Photoshop

People always rave about how amazing Photoshop is, but honestly, I have never used it before.  Not out of some non-conformist "rebellion" -- I simply have had no occasion to use the program.  But the time has come.  I did a little photo-shoot with my sister in a cemetery this past Thanksgiving, and I thought this was a good opportunity to play around with Photoshop and discover new a and exciting things.  The following is my very first Photoshop "manipulation."  I was basically getting to know the tools and how they work, so nothing fancy (or necessarily good, for that matter), but I had a lot of fun playing around.  And I admit, the program is pretty bad-ass.  I look forward to doing better and more complex works in the future, but for now, I've kept it basic.

Version 2

Yes, I intended to make her skin ghostly white, if that's what you were wondering.  I'll probably play around with this image further -- there are some aspects I'm not entirely satisfied with, yet.

Metal Hammer

My most recent assignment in Typography 1.  We did a six-page spread emulating a particular magazine layout.  I chose "Metal Hammer," which, for those who don't know, is a British magazine devoted to metal music.  The content of our six-page spread doesn't necessarily deal with the content of the actual magazine.  In fact, we were to compile information on a particular typographer or graphic designer.  I chose Matthew Carter, one of the first typographers who worked both with physical metal type as well as digital type when it was invented.  The point, however, wasn't really the content -- the point was to make it look like a certain magazine.  I'm very pleased with the turn out.

Pages 3 & 4

Pages 5 & 6

Note: These spreads were done in Illustrator, but converting them to JPEG format brings out some of the outlines in the photos of Matthew Carter.  These are not showing in the originals.
